Walk # 109 Jan 1st 2014 Mt. Douglas park Walk up Churchhill Road to the summit
On January 1st 2014 the CAMRAmblers Walking Group met at the base of Churchhill Road. That's the paved road that goes all the way to the lookout of Mount Douglas Park. Then we walked to the summit of the hill for a group photo. There were a surprising number of people there doing the same thing. The weather co-operated as usual and it didn't rain until we were coming out of the Maude Hunter's Pub after lunch. Parking was a bit of a problem due to so many people that day but there was parking on nearby roads anyway. It was good to get out with the group again after a month's absence. A few sore muscles and knees will surely let us know that we need to get back to regular walking again.

Walk # 110 January 8th 2014 Colquitz Creek Continued (Royal oak)
On a wet January 8th the CAMRAmblers met at the cross walk on Mann Ave. and started into the trails and paths that cross Colquitz Creek (River?) as the paths heads to Bryden park. The rain soon let up and we only had a few drops after that. We crossed the park and walked up Fernie Road to West Saanich Road, then following the sidewalk along to near the Royal Oak Tech Park we turned down onto the Cenntennial Trail that leads over to Lindsay Street. Wenche spyed a memorial to a cat that somebody built in a grassy meadow that used to be the Hooper residence before the house was torn down to make the Colquitz Creek Liniar park. We found a little information sign that told some of the history of the property, When we came to Wilkinson Road we turned left and followed the edge of the road to Mann Avenue again. A short walk brought us back to our cars. To view Phil's photos please click on the following link:

Walk #111 January 15th 2014 A walk up Observatory Hill and down the trail
Terry found this hill for us and then took the day off. We climbed the slopes to the Centre of the Universe on a lovely, dry January day. We saw some Douglas fir, straight and tall, and some arbutus, twisted and bent. Not so much flora or fauna today, the signs indicated we could be lucky some other time. I did pull some Daphne for John. The trail down through the woods has a couple of steep and damp spots which we negotiated without mishap. Lunch at the Crooked Goose Bistro, I heard no complaints, where Marion and Dave joined us. To view the photos and video that Phil took please click on the following link:

Walk # 112 January 22nd 2014 Another walk on the Lochside Trail
We had a delightful walk today, about 7.5km roundtrip. Larry and Linda’s daughter, Laura, joined us. She took the group photos. We started in sunshine and got as far as Michell’s Airpark, between Martindale and Island View Roads. Merv wanted to go and visit the Medical Marijuana grow-op but it was out in the middle of the morass. So we turned around and went back for lunch at Bill Mattick’s, Cordova Bay Golf Club. From the chatter, it seems lunch was enjoyed by all.

Walk # 113 January 29th 2014 South Prospect Lake Park and Viaduct Ave.
The CAMRAmblers walking group went to South Prospect Lake Park to explore the trails in this area of the park. We found that the trails on the map didn't match any of the actual trails. But we explored what we found. It was quite rainy and the trails were a bit muddy. We followed some trails that took us along the lake to another park and boat launch area. Rather than follow the muddy trails back, we walked along the road to where we parked our cars. We then drove a couple of miles to Viaduct Ave. West and found that the road marked on the maps didn't go through. We parked at the dead end and followed a trail through to the other part of Viaduct, but never found the park that was marked on the map. It was too rainy by now so we gave up and headed back to the cars and headed to the Crooked Goose Pub for lunch.

Walk # 114 February 12th 2014 Elk Lake from Hamsterly Beach to far west side
The CAMRAmblers met at the parking area for Hamsterly Beach and followed the trail along the lake front towards the boat launch beach at the north end of the lake. We then continued along the trail that leads up to Bear Hill Road and along the west side of the lake for quite a distance. We probably walked nearly half the way around the lake, and then turned around and walked back to the starting point. It seemed to some of us that it was a longer than normal walk, and it was about 7.5 kilometers in total. The wind that we had at the start of the walk dropped off and the sun came out towards the end of the walk. We had no rain at all. Those of us that went to the Monkey Tree Pub for lunch had a very nice meal. The Fat Tug is even on sale all this month. :-)

Walk # 115 February 19th 2014 Fernwood walk to view heritage homes
We parked in the Vic High school parking lot across form the Fernwood Communtiy Centre on Gladstone. As usual the showers that had started that morning stopped right before we started our walk. While waiting for the group to arrive we watched a group of preschool children spalashing in the big puddle. The walk started at the corner of Fernwood and Gladstone and wound it's way through a number of streets looking at many heritage homes and gardens. Most of the homes in the area were built between 1890 and 1930. A good percentage of them have been restored. We went to the Fernwood Inn for lunch. Most of us had something vegetarian or mostly vegetarian. Not by a plan; just because. And of course most of us had a Fat Tug too. Also just because. I forgot to pick up Suzanne for this walk. I hope that she'll forgive me. To view Phil's photos please click on this link.

Walk #116 February 26th 2014 Discovering High Quadra Walk
On February 26th 2014 the CAMRAmblers walking group met at Beckwith Park and walked around the edge of the park to Beckwith Pond, we circled the pond, then we headed through interesting parts of the High Quadra area using laneways to take us through to streets we had never seen before and historic markers and trails named after some early pioneers. We eventually made it back to our starting point after an almost exactly one hour walk that was 2.79 miles or 3.45 kilometers. The Monkey Tree Pub always has good ales and beautifully presented food and I'm sure that everyone enjoyed their lunch.
